How to train a puppy to play tug safely (without biting)

Watch here as Steph Mahrle-Mishra trains a three-month-old Australian Shepherd puppy to confidently, and playfully, enjoy a game of Tug-of-War. Playing tug using this method will build excitement over the tug toy, and build a dog’s sense of self confidence. It is important to use a slip leash on the puppy (or dog) during this training exercise. The leash keeps the dog engaged in the training, and allows the handler to be able to encourage the dog to release the tug toy when given the “out” command. Steph recommends training the dog or puppy the “out” command calmly first, before introducing the excitement of a full on pressure of the game. The method of letting the puppy or dog, “win” by setting the dog up to be able to pull the tug out of the handler’s hand, builds the confidence of the animal. Allowing the puppy or dog to “win” at tug, will not create aggressive dog behavior. Not having boundaries, and rules can create an aggressive a puppy, or a dog. Not communicating effectively can also create or encourage aggressive behavior. Playtime with a solid beginning, middle, and end will shape calm family dog behavior.
